Red Dirt Farm and Studio

Living a creative life artist farmer dreamer

Seems like everyone is posting blogs about their summer vacation.  Sunny photos with their toes in the sand.  I’m thinking, that could be me, only it isn’t.  But, if I were on vacation, this is what it would look like.

In an average neighborhood in Southwest Florida is a cozy house.

It is here that mermaid Kim shows up from time to time, and this is what vacation looks like for our family.

A chorus of Jimmy Buffett is always playing in the background.

Swaying palm trees and lots of lush tropical flowers and orchids surround the house.

Golf carts zip by and alligators are sunning on the 18th tee.

In our back yard, plastic pink flamingos sway in a breeze as they look out over the water.

I spend relaxing time catching up on my reading and photographing the abundant wild life that lives in and around the water.

There is always yard work to be done.

The big mahogany tree hosts several types of epiphytes, including Spanish moss,  staghorn ferns, and a dozen different orchids.

Our cat TC goes on vacation with us.

He loves being here as much as we do.

He hangs out on the lanai and hunts lizards and lounges by the pool.

And he ever so methodically stalks the squirrels.

For a change of scenery, TC watches the world go by on the screened in front porch.

Call us crazy but even on vacation, we spend a lot of time working around the house and in the garden.

Our lanai hosts wonderful breakfast that Charles whips up. We bring eggs from our girls to Florida, a little of home away from home.  By midday, we enjoy lunch and a swim in the pool.  Napping happens here too.

As the sun sets, the grill is fired up and shrimp, scallops, and stone crabs are a staple.

Drinks with umbrellas show up too.

TC has his own place at the table. He loves fresh grilled seafood.

I ride my bike  – Polly-five-oh all around the neighborhood, (but I don’t roller skate) taking pictures and visiting with neighbors.  Dad has been spotted taking Polly out for a spin on occasion.

.

Golf carts whirl up and down the street all day long.

Some of the neighbors have been known to get a little tipsy and pull their golf cart into the wrong driveway – just sayin’.

Oh no, not this guy – that’s the golf pro bringing Dad home after a private lesson.

A quirky thing I bet you didn’t know about me.  I like golf.  Yep, the only sport I enjoy watching on tv too.

Our house is surrounded by a golf course.   At the end of our cul-de-sac is the club house.   The first fairway is across from the front of the house and the 10th tee is to the left behind the house.  The driving range is to the right on the other side of the water.

We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch – we are going back from whence we came. – John F. Kennedy

It is here in the Gulf of Mexico with warm water and gentle waves that my mermaid tale comes out.

Beautiful blues, turquoise, and deep green meet white sandy beaches and the most beautiful blue skies.

Because our life isn’t always all about chickens and farming.

I read a couple of quotes recently that said something like that if you create the life you love you won’t need to take a vacation from it.  And another one, that said if you work at what you love then it doesn’t feel like work.

I just don’t completely agree with either of these ideas.  I love my life.  I feel honored and humbled to live where we do and doing what we love and I know that Charles feels the same way.  There are a lot of long hard days that we both put in, which is our choice, but sometimes we just need a little break from those daily routines.

What do you think?

Have you taken a summer vacation or do you have one planned?

Why do people post vacation photos on blogs and social media for all the world to see?

Thank you for being here today.

Kim, your FL house is gorgeous….and that pool…..so nice!. That’s a bit of beach heaven right there! We hope to get to the beach sometime this summer, even just for the weekend. All of our vacation money went to my knee scope this year. Fun times!! Today I am enjoying my mini vacation from watering. The rain last night might give me two days off. Got to take what you can get! Hope you got rain your way last night too! Miss you!

    1. Hi Donna – Sorry about the knee – we know all too well about such things. Not sure we can afford to vacation this year either – or even keep this house for that matter. We are surely having hard times these days. I’m so glad you got rain – we mostly had thunder which upset the dogs, which kept me awake a good part of the night and all that for maybe 10 drops of rain. Here is hoping we both can maybe take a little vacay to the beach. xo kim

Thank you for the wonderful virtual mini vacation! I love that TC gets to go. There is no summer vacation for me either. I have to work all summer to justify a month in France in September. Poor me, I know 😉

    1. Lisa – it wouldn’t be a vacation if TC wasn’t with us! I think your trip to France is my vacation – I can not wait to see your photos and read all about the wonderful art you will be making. I’m so excited for you -Oh LA LA! xo kim

Not surprised at all that TC has a place at the table. Would that subdivision allow you to rent the house out to vacationers? I’m confused – one photo shows Mr. Cottage overlooking a golf course as though that were your back yard. Another shows you sitting on a canal.

    1. Dear Miss Linda – yes we could rent if we wanted to – pretty sure we don’t care to go that route. Don’t be confused – that’s my job. The canal is in our back yard. Charles is standing on the porch at the club house. To his left is our house, which you can’t see in that photo. Scroll down to the photo of dad on Polly, the photo below shows the club house, which I took standing in our driveway. You can almost see Charles up there on the porch – okay not really.

Florida is a beautiful state and offers so much to do… fingers crossed you’ll be able to unfurl your mermaid’s tail in the not too distant future at your tropical paradise (love the macaw parrot attached to your posh bike!) We will always miss Connecticut, but have grown to love Florida (east coast)… Cheers to tropical drinks and pink flamingos!!

    1. Debbie – In our neighborhood in FL, almost all the houses on the street have sold since we bought our place 9 years ago. Several of them have passed away and the rest moved back up north from whence they came. Seems funny how the northerners come south to retire and after a few years living there, they go back home for the end of their lives. I guess for them, no matter how much they enjoyed their time in FL – it wasn’t “home.” I too have a hard time imagining life in Florida full time. We purchased this home for our retirement investment and now things have changed so much. I still love being there and wish we could get there… P.S. I have purchased a copy of Time Seekers – and can’t wait for a trip to have time to read. xo kim

Hello dear Kim. What a joy to see your Florida place! I feel like I was really there. Because of my geese, I haven’t had a vacation in 16 years. They won’t allow anyone else to take care of them-so I am fulfilling my goose mother role until they go to heaven. So I do love to see what other people do on their vacations! I love my home, but maybe someday we can travel and see the world….
