March has arrived and so have the first blooms of the season.

Oh, happy heart!

The Farm Stand had started looking rather tired over the winter.  I pulled out some scraps of vintage fabric that had belonged to Mother Cottage.  I whipped up a quick bunting and hung it out in the stand to help chase away the winter doldrums and welcome spring.

The tents are leaking and will need replacing before long.  The wind has been whipping and is going to get worse in the next day.  I pray that the tents continue to stand.  Egg production is strong and our sales are steady.

We are grateful.

I don’t know what the piece with the vintage fabric and butterfly will be.  I’ve been sewing on it on and off for quite some time.  It may never be anything.

Yesterday evening just before I started working on dinner, the crow family sounded the danger alarm, followed by Papaya and the roosters.  The girls scurried for cover and Mr. Cottage and I ran out to see what was going on.  We did not see what it was, fox or hawk most likely.  Spring always brings a lot of predators and our level of vigilance increases.

Though this group of crows still have not claimed our farm as their home base, they are certainly including us in their zone to patrol and protect.  We are grateful for that too.

Spinach, mushroom and feta pizza, that’s what’s for dinner.

But first, we had…

Mixed fruit Galette.

Rustic, simple and easy.  I just used the leftover fruit that I had on hand – any combination will work.

4 small granny smith apples, about 5 strawberries, and a half a cup of blueberries.  A sprinkle of flour, sugar and a lot of cinnamon, tossed with a splash of Cointreau and about 3 tbs of cold butter, in chunks and about 1/4 cup of toasted pecans, all mixed together and then placed on pie crust, that is roughly rolled out and placed on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.  Roughly fold edges of crust over fruit mix.  I forgot to do an egg wash – which I recommend, then lightly sprinkle crust with sugar.  Bake in preheated oven 375 degrees until crust is browned, about 40 minutes.

Mr. Cottage arrived home just as I was pulling the Galette from the oven.  He said the aroma filled the house in a wonderful way.

Life is short – why wait!

We each had a slice with vanilla ice cream before we had our dinner.

See you next time.

I agree, the galette should be first! I looks yummy.

We have a new fox hanging around the yard these days. It is the same size and the gray mottled color of our newest kitten (now almost 2). When I see it dart by, I think it is Jamie. We don’t have chickens but I am wondering how it will do with all of the cats. I hope they can all get along or at least agree to steer clear of each other. It is driving the dogs nuts though. They go crazy if they see it – even if its 2 in the morning…

    Happy Spring!

    1. Lisa – all of our animals before we got chickens lived with the fox and other wildlife, no problems, I won’t say we didn’t worry though. We had a beagle that was a hunting dog in her former life, she did a fantastic job of keeping unwanted predators away and was especially good at keeping the deer from eating our gardens. I really miss her she was a good dog in so many ways… Dogs don’t care what the time is if they think they need to sound the alarm they do – and peacocks are worse! xo kim

    1. Hi Gerri – giggle dessert first, it was good. It makes me think of my mom – she would have loved the idea of eating dessert first – and second! xo kim

I get hungry with every new post of yours- the bright-colored daffs and a chicken make things seem Spring-like. We were progressing toward Spring nicely here in SE Michigan … 60 yesterday, almost blizzard-like conditions today. I’m counting the days until Spring.

    1. Hey Linda – I’m so thinking we aren’t out of the woods yet so to speak as far as the weather goes. However, seeing the daffodils blooming is hopeful. Can you tell we love to eat? Hope the snow passes and melts quickly and that you will see some spring blooms soon. xo kim

I think that big, newly remodeled kitchen was meant to be the hub of the house, filled with warm memories and good food! I did see some snowdrops last week on my walk – I hope the snow didn’t smoosh them!

  4. I am so envious! 🙂 Daffodils – yay! I woke up this morning to 8″ of snow.
And your cat’s expression is great – I know exactly what he’s thinking.
    Have a lovely day!

    1. Dear Ivy Cottage – we worry that there will be snow yet too, in the meantime celebrating little pockets of spring and Daffodils.

I should be ashamed to show a photo of That Cat sitting next to my breakfast plate, but somehow I’m not!

Life is short! And Mr. Cottage is a lucky man! Your adorable Farm Stand must be self serve? Love it!

    1. Hi Annie – Mr. Cottage and I think we are each pretty lucky to have each other – I know sloppy sweetness.

Yes, the stand is self-serve – honor system and it works pretty well, just a few folks that have taken advantage. Most people are honest and very kind towards our little stand.
