Red Dirt Farm and Studio

Living a creative life artist farmer dreamer

We all have something.

We rang in the new year day with mild weather – almost balmy.  Today back to cool temps and rain in the forecast.  Rain is always in the forecast anymore.

I received a message just before Christmas that a local shop that has been selling my art-work for the past few years is closing down.

It brings me sadness on one hand and on the other I’m happy for the owner; she is moving on to do something else, to follow another dream and who doesn’t love that.

I went to the shop over the weekend and packed up all my inventory.  I had forgotten how much stuff I had in that store.

When I got home I backed my car right up to the farm stand and put some of it in the farm stand to sell.

Another artist will be opening her own store in another section of that same complex in a few months.  I got to meet her and she has asked to sell my work in her new place, I haven’t committed yet.

This past summer I felt so overwhelmed with stuff and I didn’t know what direction my life was going. I felt that I desperately needed to simplify my life and declutter.  I felt the time had come for me to end my creative endeavors.  I deleted all my online web pages for 3 Wishes Studio and Nightbird Creations and started the process of closing my business down officially.  I had no interest in making art or trying to sell it.

Over the past several months, my in-person friends, and my reader friends here have shared support and encouragement and given me hope. Something I needed to move forward and find a new direction.

Thank you for caring and letting me know that you are out there.

Fast forward to today.  I am looking forward to new beginnings and possibilities.

The girls were loving foraging for bugs and worms and other yummy treats during the balmy weather on New Year’s day.

Tile work is wrapped up in the house addition, for now.  We’ll have them do more work at another date.

Our plumber will be out next week to work on installing the water heater, and getting the lines hooked up over in the addition – then we will finally have water over on that side of the house – big yay!

Next on the schedule is installing the hardwood flooring.

New Year’s Eve was a candlelight seafood celebration of bacon wrapped scallops, spicy shrimp and lobster tails.  Early to bed for these two.

The next day, I took down the Christmas tree and started to put the furniture back in place.

The grumpy old man.

I met the grumpy old man at the farm stand the other day while I was stocking the egg cooler.  He has left a few disgruntled messages in my honor box at the farm stand these past few months.

Seems he keeps coming to the stand when we are sold out of eggs because our hens weren’t producing enough eggs, or when the stand was destroyed in the snow storm and then we had to close down and there weren’t any eggs for sale.

He wanted to be grumpy and grouchy because he had been inconvenienced by our losses.

I wanted him to be compassionate toward the hardships we have experienced here on the farm this year.

We each had our own outlook.

I introduced myself to him and thanked him for stopping by.  He grumbled something along the lines did I have eggs today.  I assured him we did.

I don’t remember what I said to him after that, but something I said made him pause and then one thing led to another and before I knew it, we had chatted for quite some time.

The grumpy old man shared with me that he is the caregiver to his wife, who has Alzheimer’s.  I shared my personal story of losing my mom to that dreadful disease.

Memories of how difficult it was taking care of mom came rushing back to me and in that moment I realized it wasn’t about me not having eggs.

George, (not his real name) thanked me and said he would see me next week, he looked forward to talking with me again.

I am reminded we all have something.  Moving into this new year, I want to remember to have that extra patience and compassion, not only for strangers but for myself too.

Wishing you all good things in the new year.

Thanks for stopping by today.

P.S. Did anyone notice the new blog theme?  Thoughts?

P.S.S.  I’ve been having trouble leaving comments on other WordPress sights, I don’t know if it is my computer or a problem with WordPress anybody else having trouble?

I noticed and I love it! Also, loved hearing about the grumpy old man. You are very right in that we all have something going on and you never know what others have going on or how they can be touched in a positive way by something you say or do. I saw Mr. Cottage a couple of days ago – he seems to be moving along well albeit slowly. It was great seeing him – Happy New Year to you both!

    1. Hey LaDy oh good, I wasn’t sure if I should keep the new theme or go back to the old one. Yes, everybody has something we all forget that from time to time and isn’t it easier to be kind than not? Mr. Cottage told me he saw you – he is gimpy still – and now an infection in the new leg and a sinus infection too – he is a mess from head to toe! Wishing you and yours a Happy good New Year! xo kim

Your encounter with this man at your stand was intended to happen; and you filled some void or need in his life, what a great message this brings to us all! We just never know where or how we can help, and your reaching out made it happen. I loved it. So glad you shared! You have such a green thumb, your potted flowering plants are beautiful….do you have a secret?! Best wishes for the New Year.

    1. Hi Ginny – I think the encounter was intended to happen, I believe in these things, but I think it filled a void for me too.

I got my love of gardening and plants from my mom and dad too. Confession time though that cyclamen I purchased to give as a gift and I ended up keeping it for myself! EEEK – my cover has been blown! xo kim

That cyclamen would tempt anyone! I have never had luck with them once they wilt and leaves drop, but have read you can keep them over another year…with luck, I think!

So nice to see Mr. Cottage up and about – the last few posts, he was reclining, feet up on a hassock or a Lazy Boy chair. You’ll be happy when all this mess is gone for sure. Did you throw away the lights when you took down the tree or did you find the bad bulb. Interesting after you get to know people and understand their idiosyncrasies better … it is a heavy burden to bear and you went through it. A neighbor on the corner told me about his wife, in her fourth year of dementia. The linemen were here fixing lights in his yard and I had called about flickering lights – he brought his wife out to meet me. We were all the same age – she started to cry and he waved at her to make her smile. Made me feel badly … 62 years old, a life partner and he told me the extent of her dementia while she was in the house- so sad. The best to you in 2019 Kim, whatever endeavors you choose, just get that remodeling done and restore normality again!

  6. Good Morning Linda – Mr. Cottage is up and about doing things here and there – slowly but none the less doing. Set back with infection in his leg and a sinus infection at the same time – nothing worse than being sick and in pain at the same time. UGH.

I threw the string of lights out – they were really old and the wiring kind of scared me so it wasn’t worth holding on to them. Looked like one of your squirrels had gnawed on them – LOL.

My heart goes out to your neighbors for the hardships. It is a horrible thing to deal with and at such a young age, it could go on for a very long time. I took care of my mom for 14 years, a lifetime it felt. I miss her every day.

    Normality – what’s that!

Keep walking and writing – hugs to you and the critters.

Hi Kim – How did I miss your comment? Probably was reading it and my boss called and interrupted me (the nerve) … hope Mr. Cottage is doing better with the leg infection and sinus infection – the surgery, then recovery is bad enough without setbacks. It’s best with the lights – there are so many warnings about lights anymore – I don’t remember that from years ago to be honest. The reason I popped in was this was a big story today – roosters loose and police personnel trying to round them up – thought of you and thought you might like a little laugh … the roosters made it – whew!

I love reading your blog. You are so cheerful and the pictures are wonderful. I did a craft show at your place some years back and had such a wonderful time. Now I have gotten too aged to do the bigger shows. I do make stamped cards and sell to a couple of gift shops. This is the only hobby I have and I am so thankful I can still make stamped cards. I love working with Copic markers for coloring. Maybe we will meet again one day!

    Dear Kim,
Happy New Year… hoping 2019 will bring only Good Things to Red Dirt Farm, it is so deserved. Love your NYE menu, cozy home, and of course, the ladies inside and out : ) Hope Papaya is okay…have not seen him on the Front Porch for awhile. Your story of the grumpy old man was a reminder of what we all need reminding of…and I think you have made a friend, who will hope to see you and chat far more than caring about the eggs : ) xo
