Red Dirt Farm and Studio

Living a creative life artist farmer dreamer

December 2019

Kim of Red Dirt Farm and Studio

I had this dream last night, I was traveling around the world seeing beautiful amazing places.  I was quite moved by everything I was experiencing and wanted to take photos, I kept pressing the button but my camera wouldn’t respond.

It was quite cold this morning when I headed out to open The Gypsy Dawn Art Wagon.  The grass was so heavy with frost every step crunch crunch crunch.  The air was still and my breath hung for a moment in a white swirling cloud before drifting away.  Bluebirds overwintering here were singing ever so loudly their song was so crisp and clear.  I wanted to capture this moment in my mind it was so lovely.

I went back inside and got my camera, I tried to photograph the millions of sparkly diamond frost crystals, but it just seemed like I couldn’t get the camera to respond to what I was seeing.  I thought to myself, I wished I had my macro lens on the camera, and just as quickly my mind switched to I wish I had my telephoto lens on the camera.  The blur of blue in the corner of my eye.  There just then.  Bluebirds darting from branch to branch and in and out of several of the nesting boxes.  No matter how many times I see them do this it always seems like a gift from nature.  I hurried back to the house and changed lenses and came back out to capture that amazing blue.

Quite similar to my dream, I just couldn’t get the lens to focus, or my eyes to focus, or the light right, I fiddled with the settings and finally, I said to myself it was what it was.

One of the things I have been working on this year is acceptance.  Life has had so many twists and turns for us here at the farm in recent years, and quite frankly I thought this was the year things would settle down and we would all get back on track, but it wasn’t meant to be. So I am accepting that sometimes things aren’t perfect, aren’t in focus and that is just part of this life journey and less than perfect is good.

Thanksgiving has come and gone and now December is upon us, soon a new year will be here.

This has been a busy year with so many new experiences and as I said, twists and turns that we never saw coming, some not so good some were delightful.  Just like everyone else, we have a full calendar for December.

I may not be back to this place before the new year, so I want to wish you all the very best and thank you for following along this year.

Holiday blessings to you all!

Hi Kim – Thank you for your Christmas greetings and such wonderful pictures of your bluebirds…it made my heart sing. We had them nesting in our boxes when we lived in Ct. and they are very special. Your yard is a haven for so many beautiful creatures. I wish you the very best in the year to come and Merry Christmas to you both. Your message is uplifting and inspiring and full of hope, something we all need.
    Best wishes, Ginny

Kim – your yard is frosty, your home is cozy and welcoming. I hope the lights work on the tree this year; I know they frustrated you last year. I wish you a Merry Christmas for 2019 and hopefully the new decade will bring peace to you and yours.

    1. Linda – so funny that you remembered the light disaster from last year, all is good and thumbs up this year! We are happy and cozy and in our little abode. I thought of you the other day while I was being entertained by a nutty squirrel, he kept knocking at the window trying to get in, and then he tried to get in through the skylight! Joyful new year and blessings being sent your way! xo kim

I did Kim because I remember how it exasperated you to see the tree that way. Squirrels are a constant source of entertainment in my life when I take my daily walks. On Sunday, I took nutritional treats for the squirrels and birds to make a “Season’s Eatings 2019” post, and, on a lark I grabbed six Christmas sugar cookies. I swabbed two snowmen heads in peanut butter for my two favorites. Well Parker disregarded the peanut butter and went for the Christmas tree instead. I have some cute shots of him nibbling away at the green cookie. Best to you as well Kim and I hope the new year is the best one yet for you and your family. – Linda

Red Dirt Farm is an idyllic Christmas setting… the bluebirds are so special (like all birds, they face a tough future on this planet, so seeing a flock of rare blue, rust and white made my heart sing 🙂 I have always loved your photos just as they are… you seem to capture the feeling of the moment perfectly. The softness of a slightly blurred photo cast in warm light, crisp images of feathered~furry farm residents.and the ruggedly beautiful outdoor landscape… I will never forget the beyond magical photo of a frozen-in-mid-air bubble!! (Maybe re-post for a New Year’s toast?!)

Looking forward to seeing more ‘postcards’ from Red Dirt Farm in my inbox in 2020…and wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas and a new year filled with bluebirds bringing happiness and good things your way… xoxo Debbie

Your photos are fantastic as usual…especially seeing your bluebirds because we lost all of ours to house sparrows. Here’s hoping that the holiday and the new year brings serenity and peace to your lives. ♥️

Really looks like winter there. We still have green grass but are starting to get some fall color in the leaves that actually turn.

    1. Annie – Hi I’m assuming the sparrows – took over the bluebird houses? Happy New Year! xo kim

Yes, we had 3 days in the 30’s right after several days in the 80’s. The only transitional temperature was it dropped to 55 one night. This is the kind of wacky weather that makes people get sick.

I know you have shared before, but I can’t remember – what type of camera do you use? I’m going on an Alaska cruise and would love a camera that takes the high quality photos yours does!

    1. Hi Mary – I’m a Canon girl, I’m currently using an EOS 80D with various lenses. Your Alaska cruise sounds like a fantastic opportunity to see so much nature and get some wonderful shots. Enjoy your trip! xo kim
