Red Dirt Farm and Studio

Living a creative life artist farmer dreamer

Double-crossed by a fan dancer

– from the movie gold diggers of 1937?  Not a particularly good movie in my opinion and I think this was the only funny line.  Somehow it tickles my fancy.

I love old movies, I like to watch them early in the morning before the sun comes up.  It seems to be the only time I can sit still long enough to watch a movie.

There aren’t very many farm photos to share this week.  I spent most of my days working on the computer trying to set up the shopping cart in the market section.  It takes a lot of time and it isn’t very enjoyable for me.  I did take a lot of photos of the items I make, but WordPress only allows a small display window in the shopping section, I find that a little frustrating.  I do make other things besides jewelry, but for now, I’m only concentrating on the small items.

The farm stand was keeping me hopping this week too.  People were buying fresh eggs to use in their holiday cooking.  It makes me feel good to know my girls will be contributing to Thanksgiving all over.

I went into the big city on Thursday to pick up new eyeglasses – purple passion and peacock sensation.   Much to my frustration, I can’t wear them.  The astigmatism correction is off and it makes everything all wonky.  Which means I am even more wonky than normal – if that is possible.

When I got home from my little trip to the big city there had been a major event in rooster world.

Blood was everywhere and Stanley Roo was in a crumpled heap,  with one of the other roosters trying to kill him, I had to fight that rooster off of him.   I took care of Stanley’s wounds and felt very aware that he must be through at least 8 of nine lives – oh wait that’s for cats.  Anyway, it also brought to the attention that we had to deal with the overabundance of roosters.  We have been putting off dealing with the issue since we don’t kill and eat our pets and I hadn’t had any luck finding new homes.

Fortunately, Mr. Cottage just that day, had someone ask if we had roosters available.  They came Friday night and took most of them.

Calm has been restored to Red Dirt farm and I believe that Stanley Roo will pull through once again.  He is such a baby when he is hurt.  He gets cuddly with his head on my shoulder until he realizes I am catching it on the camera and he gets embarrassed.  Bet you didn’t know roosters get embarrassed.  And yes, this is the most unflattering video ever of myself.

I also embarrassed myself while I was out and about in the big city.

I was in a department store trying on a pair of boots.  When it came time to take the boots off, I couldn’t get them unzipped.  Well, panic set in, and then the hot flashes started so I had to start taking layers of clothing off until I reached the point that I couldn’t take off anything else without getting arrested.  Finally, I had to get a sales associate to come and help me.  When I told her I was stuck in the boots, she just gave me a blank stare.

  Nothing.

Hello – can you please help me get these boots off my feet.

She just stared at me.

I explained that the zippers were stuck and I couldn’t pull them off.  She wanted to know how could both pairs have stuck zippers.  Really.  I don’t know.  So I sat down on a bench and she started trying to undo the stuck zippers.  After a bit she proclaims “the zippers are stuck.”

No kidding!

She then started pulling at the boots, first one then the other.  Again, she proclaimed “they are stuck.”  Finally, she says, she guesses she is going to have to find something to cut them off my feet.  She was staring at the boots trying to figure out how she was going to cut them when all the sudden she says “wait there are two zippers on each boot.”  Sure enough, one was decorative, the other functioning.  She calmly unzipped the boots and they came right off my feet.  Then she started laughing hysterically.  She then thanked me for the laugh.  She said she had been having a really bad day and I made it all better.

I gathered up all the clothing I had taken off, got dressed and left the store.

Events like this are one of the reasons I don’t go to the big city regularly.

I’ll be taking the Thanksgiving turkey out of the freezer tomorrow to work on the thawing process so it will be ready to cook on Thursday.  I’ve picked a few new recipes to try and several of our favorites.

I hope my friends in the states, will enjoy a special day of thanks and be safe if you are traveling.

That’s all for today, thanks for being here.

The boot thing will eventually be as funny to you as it was to me. I could just see you sitting there, stealthily removing ever more layers of clothing as you sweated out the dilemma of being stuck in a pair of boots you couldn’t figure out how to get off your person. The absolute kicker was how long it took the sales clerk, who presumably was more familiar with store products, to figure out there were two zippers and ya’ll were yanking on the wrong one! Delish! Now, take those glasses BACK!

    1. Linda – I was telling the boot experience to my sister over lunch, we laughed so hard the entire restaurant was staring at us. Sadly, I have a history of “store events”. Store clerk was clueless. Glasses will go back fur sure. xo kim

With a history of store events, I’ll bet you’re glad stores have a lot of employee turnover. What if the same employees were there every time and shuddered as you approached? Glad to hear those glasses are going back. They aren’t going to do you any good sitting in their case.

PHEW! This was a little stressful to read…mostly about Stanley (but also about the BOOTS…I found myself sweating along with you, as I read what can only be described as a gripping account : ) So happy all ended well, (mostly for Stanley!) Once again, I am wishing I could stop by your farm stand…have a lovely Thanksgiving, Kim, and so glad it will be peaceful for the residents of the coop, not to mention The Management…

Oh my! You surely do have adventures! I loved the rooster petting film of course, and loved seeing your beautiful face. I hope you don’t have to wear those glasses too long. Good luck with getting your online store up and running. I hate doing that techie stuff too. It always makes me cry, it’s so frustrating! Happy Thanksgiving!!

Glad Stanley Roo is okay. It still amazes me with your stories – love them! I never knew chickens/roosters had such personalities. Go for it chicken farmer/broker/friend of feathered creatures big and small.

I hope you and yours have a wonderful Thanksgiving and feel blessed today and always.
